El Quiñón

This is a term you will hear time and again in the Valle de Tena. It refers to a type of alliance or agreement that was made among the villages between the 16th and 18th centuries. The board discussed, debated and decided on relevant issues of the day including land distribution and boundaries, administration, justice, best practice and best use of pastures in farming.

Every “Quiñon” contained a few villages all with their own distinct outer limits. Each assembly was then represented at meetings at local government level where they could lobby on behalf of their community.

One of the original “Quiñones” that keeps going today is the Hoz de Jaca, El Pueyo De Jaca, Panticosa accord.
